Irish Week / Seachtain na Gaeilge

Seachtain na Gaeilge

Seachtain na Gaeilge (Irish Language Week) is an international Irish language festival and one of the biggest international celebrations of our native language and culture.

The festival runs from 1 – 17 March every year.

It offers an opportunity for everyone to enjoy Irish, from fluent speakers to those with just the cúpla focal. Each year, a calendar of entertaining and fun events for every age group is provided.

Community groups, local authorities, schools, libraries and various organisations put on events for Seachtain na Gaeilge in their local area. Seachtain na Gaeilge promotes one main message: Irish is for everyone. Bain Triail Aisti – Surprise Yourself!

Frequently asked questions:

Why does Seachtain na Gaeilge run longer than a week?

With the festival growing from strength to strength in recent years, its duration has been extended from a week to a fortnight. However, the brand name remains the same due to the wide recognition it has garnered since its launch in 1902.

How can I take part?

There are lots of ways in which you can take part in the festival:

  • Organise an event for Seachtain na Gaeilge. The SNAG team offer lots of advice here.
  • Attend an event for Seachtain na Gaeilge. PEIG.ie lists all SNAG events through the interactive map on the homepage.
  • “Sult” is the official festival guide and is available with the Irish Daily Mail every year. This is the only place where all festival events will be printed, along with feature articles and interviews. The magazine is bilingual so it’s a great resource for students and learners.
